ATI sustains sailing dreams of Mindoro youth

October 30, 2019

Listed port operator Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI) is keeping the sailing dreams of Mindoro’s youth alive through its continuing partnership with the Puerto Galera Yacht Club (PGYC), a premier yachting organization south of Luzon.

The Philippine trade enabler has been actively supporting the Small Boats Training Program (SBTP) of PGYC since 2017, an institutionalized weekend community initiative which trains underprivileged Mindoreño children, aged 9 to 15, in the art and science of sailing for free.

More importantly the activity provides children with a healthy leisure alternative which at the same time builds character, self-discipline and develops productive skills for the future.

This year’s ATI-PGYC Small Boats Regatta was held at the Puerto Galera Bay over the weekend tokick-start the Amihan season or easterlies, where prevailing trade winds shift towards the east making sailing more conducive.

For training, children use the club’s optimist (single sail) and lawin (double sail) dinghies donated by foreign patrons under the tutelage of PGYC’s seasoned sailors and trainers.

Considered the best juvenile sailing program in the country, PGYC’s small boats training program has produced champion sailors who have brought honor to the Philippines by representing and winning in sailing competitions locally and abroad.

Colorful sails hog the backdrop of Mindoro island as local children hone their sailing skills under the tutelage of the Puerto Galera Yacht Club to start off the Amihan season.
